High Impact Teaching Strategies – Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

Course Description: The Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) learning model focuses on High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS). These are instructional practices that reliably increase student learning. Using John Hattie’s research the HITS encourage teachers to be explicit in their teaching to enable students to better understand the work they are doing. This session will consider the research around Success Criteria and Learning Intentions. It will investigate how to write Success Criteria that link to the Learning Intention and relate to each activity through the whole lesson.

Understanding the learning needs of EAL students

Course Description: Catering for students with differing needs is a challenge for every teacher. There are often additional and specific educational needs for Students with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Frequently this means that there is extra work that needs to be prepared or extra assistance that needs to be provided during class time. This session will explore how to incorporate the learning needs of EAL students into the mainstream planning process using practices that benefit all students. This will include understanding the prior-educational experiences of EAL students and will present practical ideas and evidence-based tools to help assist these students and include them in whole class activities.

Using data to inform learning – analysing data to make decisions about teaching

Course Description: Data has value to teaching when it informs the teacher about what the students are learning and how to target lesson planning. Data has value for student learning when it helps students to understand the progress they have made and when it fits into a continuum of learning that encourages them to recognise and take ownership of their own progress. This session will explore how data can be used and collected in a continuous assessment process to inform teaching and to support students setting learning goals. In this session the presenter will share classroom-tested strategies that lessen teachers’ workload while increasing class participation and learning outcomes. A balanced life – time management for teachers

Course Description: Achieving a balance between your personal and professional time is essential for you to become an effective teacher and for you to enjoy a social and family life. It is possible to achieve that balance. In this session the presenter will:
- Invite you to reflect on how you use your time and to identify any areas where you can reorganise to achieve a better balance
- Invite you to examine the practices in your schools – are they consistent with supporting teachers to lead balanced life
- Encourage you to be active in managing workload expectations at an industry level by working collectively as IEU members
When time management is considered at these three levels, strategic and practical time management responses can be developed.

Understanding the learning needs of students with ASD

Course Description: The majority of students are able to take ownership of their own actions within the classroom. Many students, particularly those with ASD, do not have the skills to be able to recognise and act on the classroom expectations placed upon them. Behavioural expectations often need to be explicitly taught and practiced as a class as. This session will outline approaches to teaching social and emotional skills for students with ASD that can be incorporated into the regular routine to benefit all students.

This session will explore the concept of multiple exposures, explaining the benefits of it for students, what makes it work and the challenges that are presented. Differentiation will be explored as a complementary strategy to Multiple Exposures. This session will discuss the theory behind these terms and also identify some practical strategies that can be put into practice in classrooms.

A balanced life – keeping focused on your health in stressful times

Course Description: One of the greatest rewards of teaching is knowing the positive difference that can be made in the lives of students. Teachers commit to providing a positive educational experience for all students but this can easily become overwhelming if we shoulder the burdens of our students. Paradoxically if we put too much effort into caring for all students then we are unable to care for any students effectively. This session will look at practical strategies to ensure that your caring role can be managed appropriately within sensible boundaries. It is essential that teachers are able to recognise what can and can’t be controlled to make sure that energy is focussed on achieving productive outcomes and we avoid burning out.

Dealing with difficult conversations

Classroom management – responding to extreme behaviours
Date: 19 August 2020

Course Description: It can be very challenging to manage a classroom when one or more students exhibit extremely disruptive or concerning behaviour. Being able to intervene effectively is an important skill but can be difficult to get right in different situations. Putting effective preventative strategies in place is an important consideration. This session will outline preventative strategies as well as strategies that can be used in the heat of the moment, including the use of assertive dialogue to avoid undue aggression or anxiety.

A balanced life – managing a transition to retirement (industrial, financial and social issues)

Course Description: It is helpful to have a plan as you move toward retirement. For many the ideal is a transition to retirement plan including part time work. In this panel session, one presenter will inform you about the industrial issues associated with changing your employment status. It is important to have a financial plan, and a second presenter will set out some of the financial issues that you will need to consider. If you can afford to retire, you will need to think through how your life will change, once you no longer have the anchor of your teaching role. A third presenter will explore some of the social and emotional issues for you to consider.

Analysing NAPLAN and test data with your team

Course Description: The collection of data is something that teachers do regularly but being able to interpret that data accurately and lead colleagues through the narrative that data presents can be challenging. This session will establish the importance of teams using data to analyse the impact of their work on student NAPLAN results which will result in leading a team to use data more effectively. The examples covered in this course will include: Considering NAPLAN scores over time – tracking a cohort, and, Considering NAPLAN scores over time – tracking the impact of a program. Working one to one with students with ASD

Course Description: Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder may experience difficulty when planning, preparing for, getting started and completing work tasks. Poor executive function – the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully – is often a characteristic of ASD. Students with ASD can often feel overwhelmed or disconnected from classroom activities that sees other students thrive. This session will outline practical ideas and strategies for teaching task skills that will benefit all students whilst specifically catering to students with ASD.

Course Description: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) makes it difficult for people to inhibit their responses in everything from movement to speech to attentiveness. There is a need to cater for this within lessons but doing so can involve considerably more planning and preparation time. This session will explore the condition and how it manifests in the classroom and will outline an instructional practice framework to meet the needs of students with ADHD which can be built into regular practice to benefit the learning needs of all students in the classroom.

Working one to one with students with dyslexia

Course Description: Engaging with the curriculum can be difficult for a student when they experience challenges with literacy skills. For students with dyslexia, adjustments need to be made as the problems won’t simply go away with more practice. Teachers can create a learning environment and use instructional practices that address these issues and build the strategies into regular lesson planning. This will maximise the learning outcomes for all students. This session will explore a range of strategies that can be used to create a positive learning environment for all learning needs, with a particular focus on supporting students with dyslexia.

Leadership skills – courageous conversations with colleagues

Course Description: In a formal leadership role, there is pressure to respond to and resolve conflict situations with colleagues. We often have a collegial relationship, with those colleagues, as teachers in the same group or team. It is important for leaders to further develop the social and emotional competencies required to move between their teaching role and their leadership role. This session will support leaders in their approach to managing challenging conversations with colleagues and will focus on practical conflict resolution skills to manage these challenging conversations.

Leadership coaching – building the skills of your team

Leadership and management – what is the difference and does it matter?
